New installation - top menu bar missing?

Patrick M. Hausen
Hi, all

I'm new to XWiki. Just finished a fresh installation of 8.4.1
with Tomcat any MySQL, which went absolutely smooth - great!

I intend to migrate the wiki of a small not-for-profit organisation
from Confluence to XWiki, so my first two questions are

- how do I create spaces?
- how do I get a hierachical navigation tree of all pages in a space
  on the left?

I wouldn't be bothering you without doing some research first,
so I found this documentation about spaces:

http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/Spaces#HSpacecreation

Unfortunately my XWiki doesn't have that menu bar with the "Home | Main | WebHome | Add"
at all! What am I missing here?
Completely dumbfounded - the docs say "click Add -> Space" ...

Second there seems to be a "Document Tree Macro 8.4.1" extension
already installed. How do I get this - and only this - into the left menu column?

Thanks a lot for any hints. RTFM perfectly welcome with a pointer to the correct
fine manual. Search engine hasn't been of much help, but possibly my google-fu
is leaving me ;-)

Kind regards,
Patrick

Sorry about that one! It's already there ... silly me.

No one? The menu bar is clearly visible here:
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/Spaces#HSpacecreation

Yet, it is missing in my Wiki which looks like this:

Hello Patrick.

I think you should read
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/ContentOrganization/ that
will explain you everything.

Short story: we don't have space anymore but only pages that can have
children.

Hope you will appreciate.

Guillaume

Your help - yes, of course. The demise of spaces - no, sorry.
Spaces were a key feature why I picked Xwiki. We need
different $SOMETHINGS for different working groups that
should not be visible at all to users who are not members of
that partciular group, yet easily navigatable for users with
the necessary privileges. Very much like Confluence spaces.

I'll read the docs and decide if we keep exploring XWiki and
which feature (subwiki or nested pages) to use ...

Thanks again

You get what you want with XWiki :)

You can have pages under other pages and you can set permissions on pages that affect all children too.

Exactly. You can see each individual page as a space actually :)

While I appreciate the streamlined implementation - just
one concept for content separation - would it be possible
to get the "space" look and feel back?

I.e. remove the topmost hierarchy level from the left
navigation tree and put those items at the top?
And switch the left navigation depending on the top
item selected?

Simple? Hardcore customization, i.e. paid support? Impossible?

Thanks

Hi Patrick

When we started using XWiki, we also used the spaces to separate documents for different departments (Accounts, Sales, HR, Tech etc.).

The upgrade from spaces to nested (I can't remember at which version) was a bit confusing at first. But basically we now have something similar to:

Home
-- Accounts
-- Sales
-- HR
-- Tech

Where the pages under Home are top level pages using the "Dashboard" template (I think this dashboard template may have changed after 8.1 but I haven't experimented yet).

I then created groups for Accounts-Read, Accounts-Write, Accounts-Admin (repeat for each department). Then go into the "top-level" page and administer the page and go to "Page and Children" rights. You can then set the permissions for the relevant group.

Once your users are registered, you simply add them to the relevant group and XWiki handles the security for you :)

You may need to experiment with the permissions because I found that I also had to give permissions at the Wiki level (Administer Wiki > Users & Groups > Rights) and then further lock it down on the "per page" permissions. Tip: Use different browsers and incognito/private mode so you can test permission application in one browser and run as Admin in the other to change permissions.

I also use the "Panels.Navigation" in the right panel to navigate the top level pages (Administer Wiki > Look & Feel > Page Elements > Display Right Panel = Yes, Panels displayed on the right = Panels.Navigation)

I hope that helps in some way.

That helped a lot - thank you.

Thanks, everyone - case closed ;-)

Kind regards
Patrick

P.S. Now I have to find out how to run an update (8.4.2) for the first time ;-)
