Notifications final steps

Guillaume Delhumeau
Hello devs community,

As you know, my main focus this year was on the notifications. My objective
has been to replace the Watchlist with the notification emails. Today, we
are almost there.

The 2 remaining issues are:
* https://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-14844 (Live emails notifications
should be grouped by XWiki pages)
and
* https://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-14891 (Introduce a notifications
macro to replace the Watchlist macro)

I have updated the design page about this replacement:
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/ReplacetheWatchlistbyNotifications
.

I am confident that these issues will be implemented for 9.12.

Proposition:
* we encourage users to enable the notifications on 9.11 and to test it
* for 9.12, we enable all notification features by default
* for 9.12, we don't bundle the Watchlist in XWiki Standard anymore.

What do you think ?

Thanks,

Congrats on the progress.

Regarding unbundling Watchlist, we usually wait like 1 cycle before doing
that. I think we should disable it somehow, but unbundling it just from
9.11 to 9.12, which is 1 month, sounds a bit short.

Thanks,
Caty

Hi Guillaume and all,

Cool. Normally 9.11 is the last release of the cycle but we’d like to finish the notifications features in this cycle so the proposal from Guillaume is to do another release in January while at the same time we start developing 10.0 in parallel. Sounds good to me. We’ll also need to have important bug fixes in it. We need to decide 2 things:
-  do we release a 9.12 version or a 9.11.1?
- when do we release it? One month might be too long for a stabilization release and if we find important big fixes we may want to release sooner.

WDYT?

I also agree with Caty that we shouldn’t unbundle the watch list app and instead just turn it off somehow (can we do that?) and document how to turn it back on. The reason I agree t should be turned off is because it’s confusing for users to have both watch list + notifications enabled at the same time.

Thanks
-Vincent

Hi,

First of all, many congrats for the work done! Integrating the watchlist
features in the notifications should not have been an easy task!

I don't see the problem about unbundling it. All you have to do, to get it
back, is to install the Watchlist Application via Extension Manager, which
is very simple. In comparison, modifying a property in xwiki.properties
requires to have access to the server. You can even install the application
with the option "install on farm", so you have it everywhere. But we need
to check if the java listeners would not be triggered to much if they are
installed on several wikis without the "install on farm" option.

I'm not proposing to move the Watchlist to Contrib, just not to have it by
default on XWiki Standard anymore.

Maybe I don't see the whole picture, please comment :)

Thanks,

I don't think we want to move it to Contrib, probably more the attic.
Just need to make sure the very last version released work well when
installed as extensions.
