When editing some pages the last changes have been lost

jferrer
Hi XWiki users and developers,

I have recently moved from Zope's zwiki to xwiki and I'm very
impressed with it. My congratulations to the developers.

Almost everything is working correctly, but there is one issue which
is very annoying:
For some pages when I click "Edit page" the content shown on the
textarea is old! In fact it is the content I inserted the first time I
edited it. If I insert new content it is shown when I finish editing,
but when I edit it again it is lost. I have the feeling that it only
happens with the pages I created just after installing Xwiki using the
user Xwiki.Admin.

I've searched in the documentation and list archive without luck. Can
anyone help me with this problem?

Cheers,
    Jorge

PD: The details of my installation are:
Xwiki v0.9.840
Apache Tomcat 4.1.31
Debian GNU/Linux 3.1
MySQL 4.0.24

Hi,
Are you behind a proxy?
Have you tried to clear your browser cache?

Hello Jorge,

isn't it a language issue ?

I mean that you perhaps visualize and edit it in different languages.
I know it can occur when editing a page written in a different language
than your default XWiki language setting.

Try to put "?language=en" manually and see if it is the same content in
visualisation mode and in edition mode.

Cheers,
Erwann

Re: When editing some pages the last changes have been lost

Hi,

I think this is it. I have changed the default language back to 'en'
(instead of 'es') and now in the view I see the old page. So somehow
on edit It always shows the content of the 'en' language but then
saves it as 'es'. Trying to set the value of the 'language' parameter
in the URL had no effect for me.

I still don't know how to solve the problem, If I set the language to
'es' I see the latest page version but cannot edit it, if I set it to
'en' I cannot even see the latest page version. Can you provide me any
other hint of what else to test or do?

BTW, I have the multi-ligual parameter set to false. Is this correct?

Thanks for your help.

it is probably due to multi-lingual=no as you write later in your mail.
try to put it back to yes, unless you don't want multilingualism

cheers,
Erwann

Re: When editing some pages the last changes have been lost

Hi Erwan,

Setting multi-lingual to yes does solve (or hide) the problem. So it
is the solution that we have applied although we don't need this
feature (we want all the pages in spanish).

From this tests it seems that there may be a bug in Xwiki when a
language other than english is set as the default on a non
multi-lingual site. Could this be true?

Thanks again,

Jorge

Re: When editing some pages the last changes have been lost

Indeed there are 2 problems here. The first one is that the
multilingual=no seems to have a problem with users that have a browser
that has a different default language than the wiki. When you create a
page it is created in your local language, thus you don't see the page
when you browser afterwards.. But in fact the page is there, as a
translation.. If you switch to multilingual=yes you'll see it.

The second problem is a cache issue with proxies in 'edit' mode. There
are no cache control directive in the 'edit' mode, so it is possible
that some proxies don't reload the content from the cache.. This will
need to be fixed by adding cache control directives to the 'edit' mode..
There is also the possibility that in some cases IE ignores somes cache
control directive.. If we manage to reproduce this one, we might need to
add random numbers to URLs of browsers that cause the problem.

Hi Ludovic,

I think your description explains the problem. In theory Firefox
should be sending es as our preferred language but somehow it must be
doing it differently.

Thanks for checking it.

Jorge

Re: When editing some pages the last changes have been lost

Hi Luis,

There are several reasons, both from a user point of view and a
developer point of view:
- ZWiki has a horrible wiki syntax (space based)
- Modern wikis had much better functionality (we evaluated MediaWiki,
MoinMoinWiki and Xwiki) such as attachments or structured information.
- We are Java developers so with Xwiki we can add a functionality if we miss it.
- ZWiki was giving spureous server errors and was becoming very slow
as the number of pages was growing

I think these are the most important, if you have a specific question
I'll be glad to answer.

Regards,
Jorge

Very interesting indeed Jorge, thank you for sharing your experience with the community !  I would actually be quite interested in getting a better understanding of your XWiki usage and how it makes sense for you from a business viewpoint.  Actually this is the case for all XWiki users out there !  Maybe we can have a skype chat / conversation at your convenience (my skype name is kaaloo) or simply exchange on this via email.

Saludes,
Luis.
